Microsoft just put OpenAI's biggest rival inside Office

Open Excel today and you can run your numbers through Claude, not Copilot. Microsoft hosted OpenAI's biggest competitor inside its own productivity suite last week.

The news

Anthropic shipped Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word to general availability on Friday. Claude for Outlook is in public beta. The integrations carry full conversation context as you switch between apps, so the same Claude that drafts your board memo can run the spreadsheet behind it. @claudeai confirmed the launch.

On your desk

For the last year, if you paid Microsoft, you got Copilot, and that was the AI on your team's desk. That stopped being true on Friday. The same Excel cell can now route to Claude or to Copilot. Your finance lead picks per task, not per company-wide license. The procurement question changed shape. It is no longer "which AI do we standardize on." It is "which AI fits which job."

The undercard is the bigger story. Microsoft is OpenAI's largest investor. Hosting Anthropic at parity with Copilot signals that even the deepest AI partnership of the cycle is no longer exclusive.
